AWPR under construction

transport upgrades

Major transport investment is transforming the energetica corridor and access to it.

Transport Scotland in partnership with Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire councils, are funding the Western Peripheral Route around Aberdeen (AWPR), which will enable traffic from north and south of the city to by-pass it when completed in 2018.

The Blackdog junction on the AWPR northern leg will improve accessibility to the corridor linking to the Balmedie to Tipperty dualling, which will complete the dualling of the A90 from Ellon into Aberdeen.

To the west, Transport Scotland has committed to dualling the A96 from Dyce to Inverness by 2030, which will improve journey times, reliability and safety.

Construction of the Third Don Crossing was completed in June 2016. The £22million Diamond Bridge enables traffic going from Danestone to Aberdeen's city centre without having to go through the Haudagain Roundabout or Bridge of Don, helping to ease congestion and improve journey times.

An improvement to the railway bridge at Inveramsay on the A96 was completed in March 2016, which removed the signalised section and height restriction which caused delays and frustration.

Investment at Dyce station has included a fully accessible overbridge with lifts, a bus turning circle and improved access and enhanced cycling facilities. A scheme to upgrade the Aberdeen-Inverness railway is under construction and will include a second track between Inverurie and Aberdeen, to improve capacity on this constrained line.

Nestrans has commissioned consultants to undertake an all-modes study of transport issues in the Fraserburgh and Peterhead to Aberdeen corridor. This includes assessment of rail and public transport options as well as appraising the limitations of the existing road network in the area. Further detailed appraisals have also been commissioned to look in more detail at the costs and benefits of a rail link between Dyce and Ellon, and to further detail the options for improving the A90 and A952 roads.

Investment is continuing to enhance the cycling network across the Energetica corridor, with schemes currently under construction on Ellon Road and Parkway in Bridge of Don.
